Women’s brands have been the focus of criticism for decades, but in 2016 the conversation changed when they became a focus of an all-female lobbying group, Women in Business, which argued that companies were too beholden to “feminist ideology.”
But that was then.
Today, the women who form the Women in Leadership Forum—who are predominantly female and are also women in business—are being pushed by the Trump administration and other business leaders to change how they think about the role of women in the business world.
A lot of them are doing it for the same reason, says Christine Tyszka, a senior policy fellow at the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank.
“They want to make sure that their companies are inclusive and that they’re promoting a broader culture that supports women.”
And they want to see it happen quickly, Tysska says.

She has worked with the Women’s Business Forum for the past four years, which began in 2011 and was formed in the wake of a spate of sexual harassment allegations against male executives in the tech industry.

The group has been growing quickly, with women making up 40 percent of the advisory board.
In 2017, the organization launched the Women and Business Initiative, a partnership between McKinsey and Women in America, a nonprofit organization founded in 2007 that focuses on women’s leadership.
The initiative’s focus is on expanding access to opportunities for women to become business leaders and the role that women can play in the workplace.
The goal is to help companies adopt a culture that includes a more inclusive and diverse workforce.
That goal has been met, Tyloszks work shows.
“There are very few female-led organizations, and they are very underrepresented in leadership,” Tymaszka says, noting that the Women & Business Initiative has had “a lot of positive impact.”
Women in leadership is a big focus, too.
And so far, Tilyas is the only woman on the board, and the first woman to be a full-time executive director.
In her first few months on the job, she has had a number of meetings with CEOs.
One of the biggest is a partnership with IBM, where she and the other advisory board members, which are all women, sat down with executives to discuss how to develop a new business model.
Tysa is working with IBM to develop an incubator program for companies that have a gender-inclusive culture.
“I’m really excited to see IBM start to build on this,” Tylosi says.
A big problem is that we have not been inclusive of women and girls, Tynaszkas co-chairs said at the meeting.
And, according to Tysiso, it’s not just a lack of opportunity, it is a lack in leadership.
“Women have not had a voice in our workplace,” Tlyaszks co-chair said.
She points to a recent case where a female executive at one of the largest corporations, General Motors, was fired for complaining about the company’s culture and hiring practices.
“It’s really a lack on the part of our leadership, which seems to be very lacking in leadership, in our leadership,” she said.
In an effort to build a more diverse workforce, Tlynaszs work has led her to the White House, where the White Family Council is focusing on the issue of diversity in the workforce.
She’s also working with the Obama administration to expand support for female entrepreneurs in the United States, such as a $500 million grant from the Women, Action, and Technology (WALT) Program that was announced earlier this year.
And Tyszes own business is one of several women-led companies that recently announced they would be hiring for their board positions.
The Women in Enterprise Program is working on establishing the Women Entrepreneurs Program, which would help businesses to develop women-in-lead roles.
Tysoas believes that more companies will be opening up.
“When I was in the beginning of this, I didn’t see a lot going on,” Tilyszas says of the business community.
